If your car’s air conditioning has stopped cooling properly, is blowing warm air or has developed an unusual smell, it’s worth having it checked before the problem gets worse. At Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical in Sunbury, we can inspect your vehicle’s air conditioning system and, when specialist refrigeration work is required, arrange for a qualified Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC) licensed air conditioning technician to carry out the necessary work. Common Car Air Conditioning Problems At Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical, we’re often told by customers that their air conditioning isn’t getting as cold as it used to, has developed a funny smell, is blowing hot air or simply isn’t working at all. These symptoms can have several possible causes, so an accurate diagnosis is important rather than simply adding refrigerant and hoping for the best.

A loss of refrigerant can be caused by a leak somewhere in the system. Refrigerant doesn't normally just disappear, so if the system is low, identifying the cause is important. A leak can reduce cooling performance and may eventually leave the air conditioner unable to produce cold air.

Other possible causes of poor air conditioning performance include a faulty compressor, blocked or restricted components, electrical faults, problems with the condenser or evaporator, a malfunctioning fan, or an issue with the cabin air filter or airflow system. Strange Smells from Your Car's AC An unpleasant or musty smell when the air conditioning is switched on can indicate moisture, mould or bacterial growth within parts of the ventilation system. A dirty cabin air filter can also contribute to poor airflow and unpleasant odours.

Getting unusual smells checked can help identify the underlying problem and improve the quality of the air circulating through your vehicle. Air Conditioning Servicing in Sunbury Good air conditioning performance is more than just a comfort issue, particularly during hot Victorian summers. An effective system can make driving more comfortable and can help maintain a clear windscreen when demisting is required.

For convenience, Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical can arrange qualified air conditioning assistance at the same time as your regular car service. This means you don't necessarily need to make separate workshop arrangements when your vehicle needs both servicing and air conditioning attention.

We also follow environmentally responsible procedures designed to minimise the release of refrigerant gases into the atmosphere. If your car's air conditioning isn't cooling properly, don't wait until you're stuck with hot air on the next warm day. Contact Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical in Sunbury to arrange an inspection and discuss your air conditioning needs. Car Air Conditioning FAQs Why is my car air conditioning blowing hot air? Low refrigerant caused by a leak is one possible reason, but hot air can also result from compressor, electrical, condenser, fan or other system faults. A proper diagnosis is needed to identify the cause. Why does my car AC smell when I turn it on? A musty or unpleasant smell can be associated with moisture, mould or bacterial growth in the air conditioning and ventilation system. A dirty cabin air filter may also contribute to poor odours and reduced airflow. Why is my car AC getting colder while driving but warm at idle? This can sometimes indicate an issue with condenser airflow or the cooling fan, although other faults can produce similar symptoms. Having the system inspected can help determine the cause. Does low refrigerant mean my car needs an AC recharge? Not necessarily. If refrigerant is low, there may be a leak that needs to be identified and repaired. Simply recharging the system without addressing a leak may only provide temporary cooling. Can I have my car service and air conditioning checked at the same time? Yes. Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical can arrange for a qualified ARC licensed air conditioning technician when specialist AC work is required, making it convenient to have your vehicle's air conditioning attended to while your car is in for its service.

Is your car AC blowing hot air, smelling or not cooling? Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical can arrange a qualified ARC licensed AC technician in Sunbury VIC.

Engines that operate through internal combustion rely on large amounts of clean air to ensure the fuel burns properly and generates the power needed to drive the vehicle. At Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical in Sunbury, we understand how vital it is to keep your car's air filter in good condition as part of protecting your engine's health. Your engine requires extremely clean air to function efficiently. Dirt, dust, and other particles entering the engine can cause serious damage. That’s where the air filter comes into play. It ensures the air entering the combustion chambers is clean, shielding key engine components such as the pistons and cylinders from wear and damage. Why Replace Your Air Filter? Save on Fuel Costs: Your engine requires the correct balance of fuel and air to run efficiently. A clogged air filter restricts airflow, causing your engine to run inefficiently – often referred to as ‘running rich.’ This not only puts additional stress on your engine but can also increase fuel consumption by up to 10%. No one likes spending more on petrol than necessary! Protect Your Engine: Over time, air filters become clogged and weaker, increasing the risk of damage. A damaged or overly dirty air filter can allow harmful particles to enter the engine, potentially leading to expensive repairs. Benefits of Replacing Your Air Filter: Extends the life of your engine Improves fuel efficiency Reduces vehicle emissions At Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical, we always check the condition of your air filter during every full car service. Whether it’s a major or minor service, or one that follows your manufacturer’s handbook or logbook guidelines, you can trust us to keep your engine running smoothly.

Keep your engine healthy with clean air filters. Improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and extend engine life. Visit Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical for expert maintenance and reliable car servicing.

Should You Drive with Worn Brake Pads? Your vehicle's braking system is one of its most important safety features, and brake pads play a vital role in helping you stop safely and confidently. Unfortunately, brake pads gradually wear down every time you use your brakes, making regular inspections and maintenance essential.

At Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical in Sunbury, we regularly inspect and service braking systems to help motorists stay safe on the road. Understanding the warning signs of worn brake pads and addressing issues early can improve vehicle safety, prevent costly repairs, and give you greater peace of mind behind the wheel. Your Brakes Are More Important Than You Think Every time you press the brake pedal, your brake pads clamp onto the brake rotors, creating the friction needed to slow and stop your vehicle. Because this process generates heat and friction, brake pads are considered a wear-and-tear item and will eventually need replacement.

A vehicle can only stop as effectively as its brakes allow. Ignoring worn brake pads doesn't just affect performance—it can put your safety at risk.

Regular brake inspections help identify wear before it becomes a serious problem, ensuring your vehicle remains safe, responsive and reliable. Why Routine Brake Pad Maintenance Matters Keeping your brake pads in good condition offers several important benefits: 1. Improved Safety:
Worn brake pads can significantly increase stopping distances, especially during emergency braking situations. 2. Better Braking Performance:
Healthy brake pads provide more predictable and responsive braking, giving you greater control of your vehicle. 3. Reduced Repair Costs:
Replacing brake pads before they wear out completely can help prevent damage to expensive components such as brake rotors and calipers. 4. Greater Peace of Mind:
Knowing your braking system is operating correctly helps you drive with confidence in all road conditions. Common Signs Your Brake Pads May Need Replacing Brake pads often provide warning signs before they reach a critical level of wear. Watch for: Squeaking or Squealing Noise: Many brake pads are designed with wear indicators that create a high-pitched noise when replacement is approaching. Reduced Braking Performance: If your vehicle takes longer to stop or the brake pedal feels less responsive, your brakes should be inspected. Vibrations When Braking: A vibration through the steering wheel or brake pedal may indicate uneven brake pad wear or rotor damage. Grinding Sounds: A grinding noise often means the brake pad friction material has worn away completely and metal-to-metal contact is occurring. Dashboard Warning Lights: Some modern vehicles have brake wear sensors that illuminate a warning light when attention is required. What Happens If You Continue Driving With Worn Brake Pads? Delaying brake repairs can lead to more than just poor braking performance. 1. Longer Stopping Distances:
The thinner the brake pad becomes, the less effective it is at generating braking force. 2. Expensive Rotor Damage:
Once brake pads wear excessively, they can damage the brake rotors, turning a simple brake pad replacement into a more costly repair. 3. Increased Risk of Accidents:
Reduced braking performance can compromise your ability to react quickly in emergency situations. 4. Additional Component Wear:
Brake calipers, rotors and other braking components may suffer unnecessary wear if worn brake pads are ignored. Can Worn Brake Pads Affect Your Tyres? Many motorists are surprised to learn that brake condition can also influence tyre wear.

When braking performance is compromised, tyres can experience increased stress during braking and cornering. This may contribute to uneven tyre wear, reduced grip and poorer vehicle handling.

Maintaining your braking system helps protect your tyres, improve vehicle stability and maximise tyre life. Other Problems Associated With Worn Brake Pads Worn brake pads can also contribute to: Brake fade during heavy or repeated braking Overheating of braking components Excessive brake dust accumulation on wheels Rotor scoring and grooves Increased vehicle maintenance costs over time How Regular Brake Inspections Save You Money Many brake-related issues can be identified during routine servicing before they develop into expensive repairs.

A simple brake inspection today could save you hundreds of dollars tomorrow.

By replacing brake pads at the right time, you can often avoid: Rotor replacement Caliper damage Reduced tyre life Unexpected breakdowns Costly emergency repairs Simple Tips to Protect Your Braking System Regular inspections by the experienced team at Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical can help ensure your braking system remains safe and reliable year-round.

Taking a proactive approach to brake maintenance is easy: Have your brakes inspected during every scheduled service. Listen for unusual noises when braking. Address warning lights promptly. Follow your manufacturer's recommended service schedule. Seek professional advice if braking performance changes. Brake Pad FAQ How often should my brakes be inspected? Most manufacturers recommend having your brakes inspected at least every 10,000 to 15,000 kilometres or during every scheduled service. However, vehicles that frequently tow, carry heavy loads or drive in stop-start traffic may require more frequent checks. Do brake pads wear out faster in city driving? Yes. Frequent stopping and starting in urban traffic places more demand on the braking system, often causing brake pads to wear faster than vehicles driven mainly on highways. Can brake pads wear unevenly? They sure can. Uneven wear may indicate issues such as sticking calipers, worn suspension components or brake hardware problems that should be professionally diagnosed. Why do my brakes sometimes make noise after rain? Moisture can create a light surface rust on brake rotors overnight, causing temporary noise during the first few brake applications. Persistent noise should still be inspected. Is it normal for new brake pads to feel different? Yes. New brake pads often require a bedding-in period before achieving optimal performance. During this time, braking feel may be slightly different until the pads and rotors properly mate together. Drive With Confidence Don't wait until a small brake issue becomes a major repair. Book a brake inspection with Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical today and drive with confidence knowing your braking system is performing at its best.
