If your car’s air conditioning has stopped cooling properly, is blowing warm air or has developed an unusual smell, it’s worth having it checked before the problem gets worse. At Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical in Sunbury, we can inspect your vehicle’s air conditioning system and, when specialist refrigeration work is required, arrange for a qualified Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC) licensed air conditioning technician to carry out the necessary work.

At Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical, we’re often told by customers that their air conditioning isn’t getting as cold as it used to, has developed a funny smell, is blowing hot air or simply isn’t working at all. These symptoms can have several possible causes, so an accurate diagnosis is important rather than simply adding refrigerant and hoping for the best.

A loss of refrigerant can be caused by a leak somewhere in the system. Refrigerant doesn't normally just disappear, so if the system is low, identifying the cause is important. A leak can reduce cooling performance and may eventually leave the air conditioner unable to produce cold air.

Other possible causes of poor air conditioning performance include a faulty compressor, blocked or restricted components, electrical faults, problems with the condenser or evaporator, a malfunctioning fan, or an issue with the cabin air filter or airflow system.

An unpleasant or musty smell when the air conditioning is switched on can indicate moisture, mould or bacterial growth within parts of the ventilation system. A dirty cabin air filter can also contribute to poor airflow and unpleasant odours.

Getting unusual smells checked can help identify the underlying problem and improve the quality of the air circulating through your vehicle.

Good air conditioning performance is more than just a comfort issue, particularly during hot Victorian summers. An effective system can make driving more comfortable and can help maintain a clear windscreen when demisting is required.

For convenience, Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical can arrange qualified air conditioning assistance at the same time as your regular car service. This means you don't necessarily need to make separate workshop arrangements when your vehicle needs both servicing and air conditioning attention.

We also follow environmentally responsible procedures designed to minimise the release of refrigerant gases into the atmosphere. If your car's air conditioning isn't cooling properly, don't wait until you're stuck with hot air on the next warm day. Contact Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical in Sunbury to arrange an inspection and discuss your air conditioning needs.

Is your car AC blowing hot air, smelling or not cooling? Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical can arrange a qualified ARC licensed AC technician in Sunbury VIC.

Car Air Conditioning: Is Your AC Not Cooling?

Your vehicle's braking system is one of its most important safety features, and brake pads play a vital role in helping you stop safely and confidently. Unfortunately, brake pads gradually wear down every time you use your brakes, making regular inspections and maintenance essential.

At Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical in Sunbury, we regularly inspect and service braking systems to help motorists stay safe on the road. Understanding the warning signs of worn brake pads and addressing issues early can improve vehicle safety, prevent costly repairs, and give you greater peace of mind behind the wheel.

Every time you press the brake pedal, your brake pads clamp onto the brake rotors, creating the friction needed to slow and stop your vehicle. Because this process generates heat and friction, brake pads are considered a wear-and-tear item and will eventually need replacement.

A vehicle can only stop as effectively as its brakes allow. Ignoring worn brake pads doesn't just affect performance—it can put your safety at risk.

Regular brake inspections help identify wear before it becomes a serious problem, ensuring your vehicle remains safe, responsive and reliable.

Your Brakes Are More Important Than You Think

Keeping your brake pads in good condition offers several important benefits:

Why Routine Brake Pad Maintenance Matters

1. Improved Safety:
Worn brake pads can significantly increase stopping distances, especially during emergency braking situations.

2. Better Braking Performance:
Healthy brake pads provide more predictable and responsive braking, giving you greater control of your vehicle.

3. Reduced Repair Costs:
Replacing brake pads before they wear out completely can help prevent damage to expensive components such as brake rotors and calipers.

4. Greater Peace of Mind:
Knowing your braking system is operating correctly helps you drive with confidence in all road conditions.

Brake pads often provide warning signs before they reach a critical level of wear. Watch for:

Common Signs Your Brake Pads May Need Replacing

Squeaking or Squealing Noise: Many brake pads are designed with wear indicators that create a high-pitched noise when replacement is approaching.

Reduced Braking Performance: If your vehicle takes longer to stop or the brake pedal feels less responsive, your brakes should be inspected.

Vibrations When Braking: A vibration through the steering wheel or brake pedal may indicate uneven brake pad wear or rotor damage.

Grinding Sounds: A grinding noise often means the brake pad friction material has worn away completely and metal-to-metal contact is occurring.

Dashboard Warning Lights: Some modern vehicles have brake wear sensors that illuminate a warning light when attention is required.

Delaying brake repairs can lead to more than just poor braking performance.

What Happens If You Continue Driving With Worn Brake Pads?

1. Longer Stopping Distances:
The thinner the brake pad becomes, the less effective it is at generating braking force.

2. Expensive Rotor Damage:
Once brake pads wear excessively, they can damage the brake rotors, turning a simple brake pad replacement into a more costly repair.

3. Increased Risk of Accidents:
Reduced braking performance can compromise your ability to react quickly in emergency situations.

4. Additional Component Wear:
Brake calipers, rotors and other braking components may suffer unnecessary wear if worn brake pads are ignored.

Many motorists are surprised to learn that brake condition can also influence tyre wear.

When braking performance is compromised, tyres can experience increased stress during braking and cornering. This may contribute to uneven tyre wear, reduced grip and poorer vehicle handling.

Maintaining your braking system helps protect your tyres, improve vehicle stability and maximise tyre life.

Other Problems Associated With Worn Brake Pads

Brake fade during heavy or repeated braking

Excessive brake dust accumulation on wheels

Increased vehicle maintenance costs over time

Many brake-related issues can be identified during routine servicing before they develop into expensive repairs.

A simple brake inspection today could save you hundreds of dollars tomorrow.

By replacing brake pads at the right time, you can often avoid:

Brake Service & Brake Pad Replacement in Sunbury | Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical

At Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical, we understand the importance of a reliable car battery. Our team in Sunbury is dedicated to providing professional battery testing, replacement, and maintenance services to keep your vehicle in top condition. To make life easier for our customers, we offer free battery testing for anyone concerned about their car not starting easily. Alongside this, we test batteries during every log book service, ensuring your vehicle stays dependable, no matter the season.

Cold weather can significantly affect your car battery’s performance. As temperatures drop, the chemical reactions within the battery slow down, making it harder for the battery to generate sufficient power to start your car. This is especially noticeable during frosty mornings when your vehicle struggles to turn over. You might also notice dim headlights, slower electric window functions, or an illuminated battery warning light on the dashboard. Testing your battery during colder months is crucial, and the team at Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical in Sunbury is here to help.

Impact of Cold Weather on Battery Performance

When a car battery begins to fail, various components of your vehicle that rely on electrical power can be affected. These include:

- Starter Motor: Responsible for starting the engine, this part requires a consistent electrical current.
- Alternator: This keeps your battery charged and powers your car’s electrical systems while driving. A weak battery can place additional strain on it.
- Lighting Systems: Dim or flickering headlights, interior lights, and dashboard displays are often early indicators of a battery issue.
- Infotainment System: Radios, GPS units, and other electronics may not function properly.
- Power Windows and Locks: These might operate more slowly than usual.

At Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical, we assess the health of your battery to ensure all these systems perform as they should.

Regular log book servicing at Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical includes comprehensive car battery testing. This routine check ensures that your battery is performing at its peak and can reliably power all vehicle components. Testing your battery as part of your log book service helps identify any potential issues early, preventing inconvenient breakdowns or costly repairs later. Our team in Sunbury prioritises your vehicle’s reliability and your peace of mind.

At Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical, we follow a thorough process when inspecting and testing your car battery. First, we visually inspect the battery for corrosion, leaks, or physical damage. Next, we use advanced diagnostic tools to measure the battery’s voltage, cold cranking amps, and overall capacity. These tests provide a clear indication of the battery’s health and allow us to recommend replacement only if absolutely necessary. Finally, we’ll ensure the battery terminals are secure and clean, improving electrical conductivity.

Process of Inspecting and Testing a Car Battery

Common symptoms of a failing car battery include:

- Slow Engine Cranking: The car takes longer than usual to start. - Dim Headlights: Reduced brightness is often an early warning sign.
- Electrical Malfunctions: Radio, windows, or dashboard lights may not work properly.
- Clicking Sound: A clicking noise when turning the key indicates insufficient power reaching the starter motor.
- Battery Warning Light: This may illuminate if the battery or charging system is not functioning correctly.

If you experience any of these issues, visit Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical in Sunbury for a professional diagnosis.

Starting problems don’t always point to a failing battery. Issues with the starter motor or alternator can also prevent your car from starting properly. For example, a faulty starter motor may not engage the engine, while a failing alternator could leave your battery undercharged. At Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical, we’re equipped to diagnose and repair these problems, ensuring your vehicle gets the care it needs.

Car batteries typically last between three to five years, but once they pass the three-year mark, regular testing is essential to ensure continued reliability. Older batteries are more prone to losing charge, especially in extreme weather conditions. The team at Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical can test your battery’s health and advise whether a replacement is necessary. Regular testing will save you from unexpected breakdowns and ensure your car performs at its best.

When it comes to towing a trailer, caravan, or campervan, safety isn’t optional—it’s essential. At Sunbury Automatics and Mechanical in Sunbury, we provide comprehensive servicing for all your towing vehicles, ensuring every journey is smooth, reliable, and safe. As an independently owned Repco Authorised Service centre, we combine technical expertise with a friendly, local approach to keep you and your load secure.

Before you hit the road, especially after a trailer has been in storage for a year or more, a full safety inspection is vital. Tyres deteriorate over time regardless of use, wheel bearings can dry out or leak and suspension components may seize or corrode. Our inspections cover tyre condition and pressure, brake performance, suspension integrity, wheel bearing lubrication or replacement, chassis condition and electrical systems. Identifying potential issues early protects you, your vehicle and your cargo.

Electric brake controllers and mechanical brakes are essential for safe towing. Symptoms of wear include unusual noises, poor braking response, or uneven stopping. Wheel bearings that are dry, worn, or leaking can affect handling and cause uneven tyre wear, while compromised suspension may lead to swaying or reduced stability. Our experts adjust brakes, pack or replace wheel bearings, check suspension systems and ensure everything is calibrated to work together seamlessly, giving you confidence on every journey.

Tyres are the only contact your trailer or caravan has with the road. We inspect for cracks, tread wear, and overall integrity, replacing them as needed. Electrical lighting checks prevent accidents and legal issues, while coupling and jockey wheel lubrication ensures smooth manoeuvrability. Structural inspections detect rust, cracks, or damage to the chassis, which, if ignored, can compromise the entire trailer. Regular servicing prolongs lifespan, improves safety, and reduces costly repairs.

Regularly inspect tyres and replace every 5–7 years, even if lightly used.

Keep wheel bearings greased and check seals annually.

Lubricate couplings and jockey wheels to avoid stiffness or wear.

Store your trailer in a dry area to minimise rust.

Tips for Maintaining Your Trailer, Caravan or Campervan

Even when stationary, trailers can suffer damage from moisture, UV exposure and insects. A comprehensive check is often needed before a long trip, regardless of apparent storage conditions.
